This map appears when you select the MAPS tab from the navigation bar. This map contains National Nature Reserves (NNRs), Local Nature Reserves (LNRs) and Country Parks. At small scales these sites are shown as points, but as you zoom in closer you will see the site boundaries. At larger scales the NNRs, LNRs and Country parks are also labelled with their names.
You can use the Information Tool to link to pages about each NNR, and each Natural Area.
The Country Parks dataset identifies natural greenspace sites that call themselves Country Parks, of which there are currently more than 400 in existence. It contains boundaries of each area which Natural England has been told is badged as, or fits the criteria of, a Country Park.
Please note that not all sites that call that themselves Country Parks currently meet the criteria for Country Parks as established in the Countryside Act 1968.
This Act stated that Country Parks have to be:
- readily accessible by foot or car
- have an adequate range of facilities (in particular car park, toilets on site or nearby, and a supervisory service)
- be managed by a recognised body or group of bodies - some are owned by private bodies/trusts, many are owned and managed by Local Authorities.
Natural England is in the process of developing an accreditation scheme for Country Parks and related sites that will recognise sites which meet the criteria and are therefore true Country Parks.
Boundaries are digitised against Ordnance Survey MasterMap using source maps supplied by Local Authorities and/or owner/managers.
If you are an owner/manager of a Country Park and would like to tell Natural England about a boundary change, an omission or false inclusion please contact [email protected]
