Each of three streams (see
What's in the Targeting and Planning Map)
has a Wizard to help you to develop the kind of map that will be of most use to you.
When you use the Targeting and Planning Map for the first time on a
computer, you will need to set it up for each stream by choosing which map layers you want to display.
You do this using the Targeting and Planning Map Wizard, which you can return to at any time by
clicking on the
icon.
Once you have selected your initial stream of interest the Wizard takes you through the
simple steps required to configure your map, and then saves your settings for each stream as a cookie on
your computer. The next time you go to the Targeting and Planning Map, the cookie will be used to
'remember' your personal settings and configure your Targeting and Planning Map. If your browser is
configured not to accept cookies, you will not be able to use the Targeting and Planning Map,
although all the other maps and tools will work for you.
Configuring the BAP Priority Habitats stream
The first step when setting up your BAP Priority Habitat stream is to choose a Primary
Information layer, which for this stream, is a selection from the following possible datasets:
Natural Areas, National Character Areas, NUTS3 Areas, NUTS4 Areas, European / Government Regions,
Landscape Description Units and English Civil Parishes. More details about these layers can be found in
What's in the Targeting and Planning Map: BAP Priority Habitats.
Each of these datasets has been analysed to find out how much (in percentage terms)
of all the different Biodiversity Action Plan Priority Habitats is present within each feature. This
information is made available to you through the Information Tool.
Depending on which dataset you have selected as your Primary Information layer, you may have
the option of setting an initial map extent to be one of the features from it. This is not possible for
Landscape Description Units (which don't have meaningful names) or English Civil Parishes
(which are too numerous (c.11,000 records)).
Having chosen an appropriate Primary Information layer, you may then create a Thematic Map
layer from it. See
How does the Thematic Map layer work?
If you don't want to map your Primary Information layer thematically, you can still choose to display the
boundaries of its features.
You can also choose to display a single BAP Priority Habitat and up to two designated sites
map layers on top of your chosen Primary Information layer and thematic layer.
When you have made your selections click the Finish button to save them in your cookie and
display the map. You can also click the Apply button on the first page if you wish to skip page 2 of the Wizard.
Configuring the Farmland Birds stream
The first step when setting up your Farmland Birds stream is to choose whether you wish to display the default 'Grassland and Arable assemblages of Farmland Birds' layer, showing records for Farmland bird species in these two assemblages together, or whether you would prefer to display one of the other options (such as the Rare Species Farmland Birds, the Grassland assemblage birds, the Arable assemblage birds, All Farmland Birds together, or records for just one of the 14 individual Farmland Bird species), any one of which you can select from the drop-down list.
Whether you choose to display one or all species records on the map, the Information Tool will report on the relevant Farmland Bird species that have records at the location you specify. In addition, the HLS Target Areas will display beneath the Farmland Birds records on the map. More details about how the Farmland Birds records were derived can be found in What's in the Targeting and Planning Map: Farmland Birds stream.
You can also choose to display a BAP Priority Habitat, and up to two designated sites map layers on top.
When you have made your selections click the Finish button to save them in your cookie and display the map. You can also click the Apply button on the first page if you wish to skip page 2 of the Wizard.
Configuring the Priority Catchments stream
The first step when setting up the Priority Catchments stream is to choose your Primary
Information layers, which for this stream is a selection from Priority Catchments and/or Designated Sites at
Risk of Diffuse Agricultural Pollution. By default both of the information layers will be selected, but you
must continue with a selection from at least one of these options.
The Designated Sites at Risk of Diffuse Agricultural Pollution relate to those sites listed
in English Nature Research Report No. 551
(http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/publications/publications/default.aspx) and
are thematically mapped according to their priority status. They are statutory Designated water-dependent
sites considered to be most at risk from, or impacted by, diffuse agricultural pollution. The Priority
Catchments layer is indicative of the hydrological catchments draining into these designated sites, as
defined by data describing the surrounding terrain. More details about these layers can be found in
What's in the Targeting and Planning Map: Priority Catchments stream.
You can then choose to display a BAP Priority Habitat and up to two designated sites map
layers on top of your chosen information layers from this stream.
When you have made your selections click the Finish button to save them in your cookie and
display the map. You can also click the Apply button on the first page if you wish to skip page 2 of the Wizard.
